If you watched the debate last night, it came down to a couple of points. First, if you hate Trump then you hate him more now. If you like Trump’s delivery, then there was a lot to love last night. On the other hand, if you do not like or understand the Trump delivery then you were probably turned off.
This all does not amount to like or dislike. We are not hiring someone to be our friend. We want someone to run the country. If you are being honest with yourself, I mean totally honest you realize Joe Biden is not prepared to run the country. His body language is weak. He did not look at Trump one single time. These are the signs of weakness. Who do you want sitting down with world leaders negotiating on behalf of our country? For me, the answer to that is clear. There is only one person who is prepared for that challenge.
With all that said, Trump was not playing to the independents. He was not trying to broaden his base. You might think that to be a mistake, but it was a definite strategy. Trump’s goal last night was to cut into Biden’s base while not losing any of his own. This mission was accomplished by driving a wedge between himself and one of the most powerful groups in his party, the AOC far left.
By widening the rift between himself and the Bernie / AOC/ Squad side of the party it will shave away votes for Biden. It is widely known that Hilary lost votes by alienating the left. The result is that they either voted for Trump in the last election, or did not vote at all. Trump is setting Biden up for a repeat performance. It might work and it might not, but that was the strategy and that is obvious.
Trump was able to get Biden to assert with anger that he runs the party not Bernie or the left. This will not play well with Bernie supporters.
Biden distanced himself from the green new deal. This is a bill which is championed by the AOC left and co-sponsored by his own VP.
Biden distanced himself from any bans on fracking which is another item that the far left is serious about.
Biden came out against defund the police. Not only did he come out against it, but he tried to say Trump is the one looking to defund the police. Biden was for defunding the police before he was against it. You can decide for yourself what diverting funds translates to.
Remember one thing though. When AOC was asked to clarify what defund means she said it means what it says. It means to defund them period, full stop.
Trump knows that a lot of the people who are rioting in the streets are from the left wing of Biden’s party. This is part of the reason he pushes so hard on the law and order topic. Granted it is right we do need law and order because it is important. However, a side affect of pushing this topic is that he forces Biden to denounce a big portion of his left-wing base. So, while it is the right stance to have for the good of the country, it also in this case benefits Trump to drive it home. This forces Biden to denounce these groups on national TV.
These are just a few instances that come to mind that I am remembering off the top of my head from last night. With all this said, Trump did have a secondary plan which he executed on Mr. Biden last night.
His secondary line of attack was to make Biden’s temper flare. Biden has a bad temper this is known. It has become more obvious in recent exchanges when challenged on the campaign trail. A lot of people feel this loss of temper might be due to health issues. Regardless though, one thing is fact. Trump got Biden to look a lot less Presidential last night.
Biden told Trump to shush, called him a clown, called him stupid, racist, and told him to shut up. Trump is a street fighter, and some have come to expect him to act like this. Except he did not, because it was Biden doing most of the name calling last night. Did Trump interrupt a lot? Yes. Did Trump push Biden’s buttons to get him off balance? Yes, but that is Trump doing Trump.
One parting point I would like to make is that Chris Wallace did not treat Trump fairly. No honest person would watch and not realize Chris Wallace had bias.
